The family of Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old black teenager who was tragically shot and killed by a police officer in Balch Springs, Texas, is seeking answers and accountability in the wake of this senseless act of violence.
On the night of April 29, 2017, Jordan was leaving a party with his brothers and friends when the police were called to the scene due to reports of underage drinking. As Jordan and his companions were driving away from the party, Officer Roy Oliver fired shots into their vehicle, striking Jordan in the head and killing him instantly.
The initial police report claimed that the officers felt threatened by the car driving in their direction, but body camera footage later revealed that the vehicle was actually driving away from the officers when the shots were fired. This evidence led to the swift termination and arrest of Officer Oliver, who was charged with murder.
Since that fateful night, Jordan’s family has been searching for answers as to why their son, a well-loved and promising student-athlete, was targeted and killed by a police officer. They are also seeking accountability from the Balch Springs Police Department for failing to properly train and supervise their officers.
The family’s lawyer, Lee Merritt, has stated that they are considering filing a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Balch Springs and the police department. They are determined to ensure that Jordan’s death is not in vain and that justice is served for their beloved son.
The tragic shooting of Jordan Edwards is just one of many instances of police violence against black individuals in America. It has once again brought to light the issue of racial profiling and excessive force used by law enforcement officers, especially towards minorities.
It is imperative that the officers involved in this incident are held accountable for their actions and that reforms are made within the Balch Springs Police Department to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The Edwards family deserves justice for their son, and they will not rest until they have the answers and accountability they seek.
