However, internally this might be a whole other story. In America, the average black family is only one-tenth as wealthy as the average white family. Black Americans controlled zero point 5 percent of the nation’s wealth in 18 63. For nearly the same fraction of the whole population, it is a little over 1.5 percent today.
The presumption of progress following the abolition of slavery and the victories of civil rights has largely obscured the root of that stalemate. But for every advancement made by black Americans, those in positions of authority devised new forms of discrimination that were largely hidden from view and repeatedly sabotaged the economic promise of freedom.
