Diversity and Inclusion: The University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Ongoing Commitment to Equity and Social Justice

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has long been recognized for its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion on its campus. As a historically black university, UMES has a rich tradition of providing educational opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. The university prides itself on creating an environment that celebrates different cultures, perspectives, and experiences, and fosters a sense of community among its students, faculty, and staff.

UMES’s commitment to equity and social justice is evident in its strategic initiatives, policies, and programs that aim to promote diversity and inclusion. The university’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion works to ensure that all members of the campus community feel valued, respected, and supported. This office provides resources, training, and programming to promote understanding and appreciation of diversity, and to address issues of bias, discrimination, and inequality.

One of UMES’s most visible efforts to promote diversity and inclusion is its annual Diversity and Inclusion Week. During this week-long event, the university hosts a series of workshops, lectures, and cultural events that explore topics related to diversity, equity, and social justice. These activities provide opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to engage in meaningful discussions, learn from each other’s experiences, and build bridges across differences.

UMES also works to ensure that diversity and inclusion are woven into the fabric of the university’s curriculum and campus life. The university offers a variety of academic and co-curricular programs that promote multicultural understanding, social justice, and inclusive excellence. These programs help students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.

In addition to its internal efforts, UMES also collaborates with external partners to advance diversity and inclusion in the broader community. The university engages in partnerships with local schools, businesses, and organizations to promote diversity, equity, and social justice, and to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

As UMES continues its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the university remains dedicated to creating a campus climate that is welcoming, inclusive, and affirming for all members of its community. By cultivating a culture of respect, understanding, and collaboration, UMES is helping to build a more just and equitable society for future generations.
