Leadership in Action: University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Impact on the Community and Beyond

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) has long been known for producing leaders who make a positive impact on their communities and beyond. From its founding in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy to its current designation as a public historically black university, UMES has always been committed to providing a high-quality education that prepares students for successful careers and active citizenship.

One of the key ways in which UMES fosters leadership is through its emphasis on community engagement. The university’s motto, “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve,” reflects its mission to educate students who are not only academically accomplished but also committed to making a difference in the world. UMES students are encouraged to get involved in their communities through volunteer work, internships, and service-learning projects. Many students also participate in organizations like the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, which promotes academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

UMES also offers a number of programs and initiatives that focus specifically on developing leadership skills. The university’s Honors Program, for example, provides gifted students with opportunities for intellectual growth, cultural enrichment, and community service. The Student Government Association allows students to take on leadership roles and make key decisions on campus. The Center for Access and Achievement in Science offers workshops and seminars on leadership development for minority students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

One of the most inspiring examples of UMES leadership in action is the university’s Impact Leadership Academy. This program, which is open to all students, focuses on developing ethical, innovative, and socially responsible leaders who can effect positive change in their communities. Participants in the Impact Leadership Academy engage in team-building exercises, community service projects, and networking opportunities with local leaders. Through these activities, students learn valuable skills such as communication, problem-solving, and decision-making that will serve them well in their future careers.

UMES alumni are also making a mark in their respective fields and communities. From educators and healthcare providers to entrepreneurs and policymakers, UMES graduates are leading the way in a variety of industries and making a difference in the lives of others. For example, Dr. Kweisi Mfume, a UMES alumnus and former U.S. Congressman, has dedicated his career to advocating for civil rights and social justice. In recognition of his leadership and service, Dr. Mfume was recently elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

In conclusion, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is a hub of leadership development and community engagement. Through its emphasis on academic excellence, service, and innovation, UMES is shaping the next generation of leaders who are poised to make a positive impact on their communities and beyond. As the university continues to evolve and expand its offerings, it will no doubt continue to produce alumni who are leaders in their fields and change-makers in society.
