Meet London Breed: San Francisco’s First Female African American Mayor

London Breed made history in 2018 when she became San Francisco’s first female African American mayor. Born and raised in the city, Breed’s rise to power is a testament to her dedication to improving the lives of those in her community.

Breed grew up in poverty in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood and was raised by her grandmother, who worked as a security guard to make ends meet. Despite facing many challenges growing up, Breed was able to overcome the odds and pursue her education. She graduated from the University of California, Davis and went on to earn a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco.

Breed’s passion for community service led her to become involved in local politics, serving on the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency Commission and later as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. In 2017, she was elected president of the Board, making her the first African American woman to hold that position.

When former Mayor Ed Lee passed away unexpectedly in late 2017, Breed was appointed as acting mayor, becoming the first African American woman to lead the city. She ran for mayor in the following election and won, cementing her place in history as San Francisco’s first female African American mayor.

As mayor, Breed has focused on addressing some of the city’s most pressing issues, such as homelessness, affordability, and public safety. She has implemented policies to increase affordable housing, expand mental health services, and support small businesses. Breed has also worked to improve public transportation and infrastructure in the city.

Breed’s leadership has not been without controversy, as she has faced criticism for her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing homelessness crisis. However, she remains committed to serving the people of San Francisco and making the city a better place for all residents.

London Breed’s historic election as San Francisco’s first female African American mayor is a milestone not only for the city but for the country as a whole. Her dedication to public service and her commitment to improving the lives of others serve as an inspiration to all who strive for positive change in their communities.
