Witnesses Speak Out About the Night Jordan Edwards Was Killed by Police

On the night of April 29, 2017, Jordan Edwards, a 15-year-old African American high school student, was tragically shot and killed by police officers in Balch Springs, Texas. The incident sparked outrage and renewed calls for police accountability and justice for victims of police violence.

Witnesses who were present that night have come forward to share their accounts of what transpired leading up to the fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards. Their testimonies shed light on the events that unfolded and raise serious questions about the actions of the police officers involved.

According to witness accounts, Jordan and a group of friends had attended a house party in Balch Springs that evening. The party was quickly disbanded after police were called to the scene to investigate noise complaints. Jordan and his friends left the party in their vehicle, driven by his older brother.

As they were driving away, witnesses say that a police officer, later identified as Roy Oliver, ordered the vehicle to stop. The officer then approached the car with his weapon drawn, ultimately firing multiple shots into the vehicle as it drove away. Jordan Edwards was struck in the head and tragically lost his life.

The witness testimonies contradict the initial police account of the incident, which claimed that the officer fired his weapon because the vehicle was backing up in an “aggressive manner.” However, video footage from body cameras worn by the officers at the scene revealed that the car was actually driving away from the officers when the shots were fired.

The shooting of Jordan Edwards sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice. Roy Oliver was ultimately charged with murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison for the killing of Jordan Edwards. The case highlighted the need for accountability and transparency in policing, particularly in communities of color where instances of police violence are all too common.

The witnesses who have spoken out about the night Jordan Edwards was killed have played a crucial role in seeking justice for his death. Their courage and willingness to share their accounts have helped to shine a light on the truth of what happened that fateful night and have spurred important conversations about the need for police reform and accountability.

Moving forward, it is essential that we continue to listen to and support witnesses who come forward with information about incidents of police violence. Their testimonies can be instrumental in holding law enforcement accountable and ensuring that tragedies like the killing of Jordan Edwards are not repeated in the future. Justice for Jordan Edwards and all victims of police violence must be a top priority as we work towards a more just and equitable society.
