Born on October 17, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, Mae Jemison grew up in Chicago, Illinois, where she excelled in school and developed a keen interest in science and space exploration. After graduating from high school, Jemison went on to attend Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. She then went on to attend Cornell University Medical College, where she obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree. Jemison’s unique combination of scientific and medical expertise would soon pave the way for her historic journey into space.
In 1987, Jemison applied to NASA’s astronaut training program and was accepted out of a pool of over 2,000 applicants. On September 12, 1992, Mae Jemison made history as she boarded the Space Shuttle Endeavour as a mission specialist on STS-47, becoming the first Black woman to travel to space. During her eight-day mission, Jemison conducted scientific research in materials science, life sciences, and human adaptation to weightlessness.
Jemison’s journey to space was not only a personal achievement but also a monumental milestone for diversity and inclusion in the field of space exploration.
